Set in the village of Orkney Springs, near Bryce Mountain, Shrine Mont is the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. This scenic conference center and retreat features the circa-1873 Virginia House (originally the Orkney Springs Hotel); Maryland House, built in the early 1850s; and other cottages and camp facilities. Shrine Mont is also acclaimed for the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration, an open-air cathedral consecrated in 1925.
St. John's parish is inviting all Franciscans to join them for "A Magic Kingdom at Shrine Mont." Mark your calendars now for the annual weekend extravaganza. Going to Shrine Mont has been a Langley Parish (St. John's and St. Francis) tradition for almost 30 years now and truly offers something for everyone!
There will be plenty of activities for children of all ages, fun for singles and games for the whole family. Activities planned include: bonfire and S'mores, zip line adventure at Bryce Mountain, crafts, a book discussion, swimming (pool and the lake), yoga, a softball game for all ages, hiking to the Cross and to North Mountain, labyrinth, winery tours, running, fishing, exploring, hayrides, ice cream social, the ever popular costume parade and a Variety Show. Other activities available include horseback riding, golf, bridge and touring. Of course, you can also just relax in a rocking chair on the porch overlooking the pond with a favorite book.
Most people arrive late Friday afternoon in time for happy hour, dinner and Compline at the bonfire. Saturday is jammed packed with fun things to do and finishes with a Variety Show which showcases the "talents" of rising stars of all ages. The weekend concludes with an outdoor church service at the Shrine on Sunday morning. All meals are provided, and each evening has a social hour for both young and old alike.
