St. Francis often conducts collections of items needed by various organizations we support.
Below you will find information on the current opportunity to help others in need.
Thanksgiving Food Drive for Second Story
October 27 – November 17
The children and youth in the after school and other programs run by Second Story come from needy families, such as the Cortez* family. Mrs. Cortez is a single mother struggling to provide stable housing and food for her six children. The children are all eager participants in Second Story's after school programs, and the staff has been impressed with their resilience, diligence in completing their homework, and devotion to their mother. Second Story is asking for our help in ensuring that the Cortez family and many other needy families can enjoy a Thanksgiving meal together.
*A real family but not their real name.
If you would like to donate a Thanksgiving food "basket," each should include all of the following items to serve at least six people:
Safeway or Giant gift card for $20 to purchase turkey or other meat and milk
Macaroni and cheese
Four cans of vegetables (two types)
Dry black beans
Maseca flour (brand carried by Great Falls Safeway and other stores)
Three cans of fruit
Please put grocery gift cards in an envelope marked "Food Drive" and put them in the offering plate or send/give them to the church office. Food 'baskets" should be put in the bins across from Millen Hall. The last day of the drive will be Sunday, November 17 th . Annual Christmas Party for Families in Need
Saturday, December 14
Our annual Christmas party for Samaritan Ministry and Housing Up families will be on Saturday, December 14. We need volunteers to help at the party. All ages are welcome, and young children can have fun at the craft table. The party is from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Christ Lutheran Church, 5101 16th St. NW, Washington, DC. There will be a caravan leaving from St. Francis at 9:00 am to arrive at Christ Lutheran for set-up at 10:00. Directions to Christ Lutheran will be provided.
St. Francis provides a Christmas lunch buffet, Christmas crafts, Bingo, and a "toy shop," where parents can choose a gift for each of their children. For information on donating children's Christmas gifts for the shop, please see the following announcement. Children's Christmas Gift Drive
We need lots of Christmas gifts for the children in families served by Samaritan Ministry and Housing Up. We will bring the children's gifts to our Christmas party on December 14 for these families in need, and parents (sometimes grandparents) will choose a gift for each of their children. For many years, this has been a very important and fun part of the Christmas party. If you would like to donate to the Children's Gift Drive, please choose from the links below to sign up to donate gifts by children's ages. Please put your unwrapped gifts in the bins across from Millen Hall by or before Sunday, December 8. Target gift cards should be put in the offering plate or sent/given to the church office. If you would like to give a check to purchase gift cards, please write "Target gift card" on the memo line.
